Albert David "Abe" Allen

VASSALBORO -- Albert "Abe" David Allen of Legion Park, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed peacefully away, surrounded by his loving family at his winter home in Inverness, Fla., on March 6, 2009, after living a long and productive life.

Albert was born Sept. 23, 1912, in Livermore Falls to George and Ethel Allen. He was predeceased by his brothers Paul and Robert. He grew up on his family's farm on High Street and graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1931. Though times were tough during the Depression, he found work at the Dreamland Theater, at the A&P Market and on the road with his brothers, selling magazine subscriptions. During World War II, he worked as a shipbuilder at Bath Iron Works.

On June 15, 1941, in Lincolnville, he married the love of his life, Annie Munroe, with whom he shared life's load for 64 years, including the introduction to the world and raising of their baby boomers Glen, Paul and David. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

They lived on Oak Street in Augusta for 25 years, during which time he worked at Edwards Manufacturing and Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, owned Augusta Fruit Co. and worked for the Maine State Liquor Commission, from which he retired in 1968. They started Four Seasons Farm to produce organic vegetables and live "the good life." They became charter members of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association and won many blue ribbons with their produce at the Common Ground and Windsor fairs.

In his later years, Albert traveled worldwide with Annie and wintered in Mexico, Texas and Florida.

As he passed through life, he made only friends and was loved by all who came to know him. Abe was a true gentleman with a pleasant, friendly way, a wonderful smile, and a love of all animals. Abe will be greatly missed by those who knew him.

As modest in death as he was in life, Abe requested no funeral service; but the family will hold a private service in the spring at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Livermore Falls.

Arrangements are by Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home, Inc. of Inverness, Fla. Contributions in Albert's memory may be made to Hospice of Citrus County, 10 Regina Boulevard, Beverly Hills, FL 34465.
