CORINTH and KENDUSKEAG - Lester V. Bean, 91, died August 7, 2014, with his loving family by his side at the veterans' home in Bangor after his battle with COPD and cancer. He was born Oct 11, 1922, in Presque Isle, the son of Dudley and Belle (Achorn) Bean.

Lester grew up in East Corinth, attended East Corinth Academy and served as a technical sergeant in radio communications in the U.S. Marines during World War II at Guadalcanal and Green islands in the South Pacific. After the war, he married Roberta Strout of Bradford and in February, they celebrated 67 years together. He was a fireman with the Canadian Pacific Railroad, worked construction and ran a poultry farm for 12 years in Hampden and Winslow. After retiring in 1985 as a truck driver for Lyle Pierce, Inc., of Newport, he took up cooking while Roberta continued to work. His baked beans and rolls were a hit at all family gatherings, which he enjoyed so much. Whenever you visited, he always wanted you to stay to eat; he gave up cooking only a few months ago. He was a founding and lifetime member of the American Legion of Corinth.

At 86, one of his life highlights was going to Campbellton, N.B., and meeting his 96-year-old sister Iva Osgood for the first time, then having Iva's family come for a gathering to meet rest of family with 96 in attendance.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Roberta (Strout) Bean, are his children, Carlah & Wayne Bishop of Kenduskeag, Ruthena & Raylan Brasslett of Glenburn, Lester, Jr. (Bud), Rodney & Deanna all of Bangor, Robert & Dotty of Newport, Myrna & Adolph Martin of Turner, Joanna Galkowski of Rockland and Verna & Peter Hussey of Winslow; 25 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; brothers Herbert & Audrey of Bangor and Winston & Priscilla of Blacksburg, Va.; sisters Iva Osgood of Campbellton, N.B., Ella Duran of Portland and Glennis Downing of Palmyra; sisters-in-law Rita Bean and Joyce Mailman of Corinth, and Geneva Allen of Bradford; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Franklin, Willis, and Ralph; sisters Marion, Avis Kee, Anna Keough and a grandson, Jeremy Bean. The family wishes to thank the vets' home for the wonderful care given to him.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 11, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug 12, with Dalton Dunfee, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., immediately following the service.
