WINTHROP - Gladys Hope King, 90, of Winthrop, died Friday, July 25, 2014, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation, Glenridge Drive in Augusta.
She was born in Providence, R.I., April 25, 1924, the daughter of Edmund and Amanda (Luce) McDougall. Gladys grew up in Providence and was a member of the Grange while she lived there. She sang in the Seabee Orchestra during World War II. She and her late husband, Lees King, spent their honeymoon on Maranacook Lake which led them to retire in Winthrop 30 years later. They had lived in Virginia and England.
Gladys was active in the League of Women Voters while in Virginia. She was very politically astute and enjoyed being involved in politics. She was also an avid golfer and loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. King was predeceased by her husband, Lees King.
She is survived by her son, Leland Eric King and his wife, of Virginia; her daughter, Faith Speidel and her husband, Dan, of Ohio; and her grandchildren, Shawn Speidel and Langdon King.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014, at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road in Augusta.
