MILLINOCKET and WINSLOW - Fred A. "Pete" Portwine, 92, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at an Augusta health care facility. He was born Aug. 23, 1921 in Soldier Pond, the son of Maxim and Mary (Saucier) Potvin.

Pete was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He also served 20 years in the National Guard, retiring as a Master Sergeant. Pete worked for Great Northern Paper Co. in Millinocket as a papermaker, retiring in 1983 as a papermaker trainer with 37½ years experience. He was a member of Francis Elliott Post 4154, VFW, and the Donald Henry Post 80, American Legion, in Millinocket. Pete was a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Millinocket for many years, and was a volunteer at Meals for Me, the Katahdin Area Support Group and the SHARE program.

He is survived by a daughter, Lois Ann Berry and her husband, Donald, of Millinocket, three sons, Richard Portwine and his wife, Carol, of Gorham, Peter Portwine and his wife, Carla, of Millinocket, and Michael Portwine and his wife, Robin, of Winslow; nine grandsons, Donald and David Berry, and Jon, Andrew, Ryan, Jeremy, Tyler, Brandon and Bryant Portwine; seven great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; a brother, Larry Fortin, of Middlebury, Conn.; two sisters, Anita Wrogg, of Naugatuck, Conn., and Lorraine Vernovai, of New Hampshire; a brother-in-law, John Levesque Sr.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Pete was predeceased by his wife, Pauline, a son, David, and his second wife, Dorothy.

A Liturgy of the Word service and communion will be celebrated 11 a.m.Thursday, Jan. 29, 2014 at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church of Christ the Divine Mercy Parish, 19 Colby St., Millinocket, with the Rev. Joel Cyr, pastor, presider. Spring interment with military honors will be at the Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Pete may be sent to the Katahdin Area Support Group, P.O.
